The rundown on the new S3 Object Lambda!

With the recent announcement of S3 Object Lambda, it’s never been easier to process data for particular applications without adding unnecessary amounts of engineering. This serverless feature takes data leaving an S3 bucket and adds custom code according to its end-point destination, without affecting the original data or requiring users on the end-point application to interact directly with the S3 bucket or make custom changes themselves.

How It Works

After an S3 GET request is made, a Lambda function jumps in between the S3 bucket and the end application. This Lambda function uses information in the file to generate a new, custom object or response that is then passed on. At its simplest, this function could change the dimensions of a given image to that required by the end application, without necessarily changing the properties of the stored image.

The possibilities are really endless, however. Changing data formats, adding context-specific code, or removing sensitive information can all be automated, freeing up time and resources that could otherwise be used on more critical operations.

It’s important to note, however, that the S3 Object Lambda function only supports GetObject requests, and not PutObject or ListObjects. Yet the potential applications and straightforward nature of this service make it one of the most exciting that AWS has rolled out recently. It has applications in every area of cloud infrastructure management, from security to DevOps and everything in between!
