What’s new on AWS: AWS App Runner

Containerization has transformed the way that data-handling businesses respond to challenges, implement changes, and keep their DevOps processes streamlined. Through this process, services and applications are packaged with their underlying dependencies in discrete packages called containers. This avoids conflict between applications and services that would otherwise share these dependencies. With this implemented, engineers can make crucial changes when they’re needed without having to worry about causing errors or service disruptions.

Though Amazon Web Services already has a number of containerization services, it is with the announcement of AWS App Runner that this capability has been put in the hands of AWS customers. Even with no prior infrastructure experience, customers can deploy the containerized infrastructure necessary to run their source code efficiently and effectively.

Let’s see how it works

AWS App Runner works particularly with web applications and API to create a production-ready containerized service. This process begins with the source code of the application or API in question.

You’ll want to sign in to your AWS account first and access the App Runner console. This will be where everything related to launching containerized services can be found. This can also be found in the AWS Command Line Interface (CLI.)

The first step is to configure the relevant attributes of your source code. These include choosing the hosting region, the repository type, environment variables, and other attributes. You’ll also be able to choose the CPU, memory, and performance options that work best for your application and your price range.

AWS App Runner will walk you through the necessary steps to set up your service. You can run an automated health check, establish security parameters and define any identification tags to keep things organized. Once you’ve gone through these steps, you’ll be able to launch your application in a test environment. This allows you to see how your application would perform in real-life scenarios.

Once you’re ready to launch, simply click create and deploy to get your application up and running! If you would like to change something about your application, such as the source code or service settings, you can do so without having to start over. Simply click the pencil icon above your source code and make the changes. The App Runner CI/CD capability automatically builds and deploys the change to your service.

Benefits

Simplified Deployment

No prior containers or infrastructure experience is required to use AWS App Runner. Source code can be implemented from a wide variety of coding languages and automatically containerized. This makes it a breeze to launch these services, without the complexities of server configuration and load balancing.

Work at Scale

No matter your data requirements AWS App Runner is built to scale. When traffic increases, so too are the resources available for your application. When user traffic wanes, so too does the cost of hosting your application. This makes AWS App Runner an attractive option for businesses of all sizes.

Jumpstart Your Business

You’ll never have to worry about keeping up with security and compliance updates or keeping your servers up-to-date. As part of an AWS well-architected infrastructure, AWS App Runner automatically keeps track of the newest software updates, and seamlessly integrates them into your current infrastructure. This saves businesses valuable time and money!
